The Celtic Manor Resort, Coldra Woods, The Usk Valley, Newport
Nigel Wyatt first began working with Celtic Manor back in 1995 when he was asked to price a design/build drainage system for the Roman Road Course. The company was successful with the bid and a new primary drainage system was installed within the 18 fairways of the course. The construction of the Wentwood Hills course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr followed and after the success of the initial contract the company carried out works for the design and installation of the drainage system, installation of the irrigation system and other construction works.
Following the resort’s successful Ryder Cup bid work began planning and tendering for the construction of the 2010 course. In 2005 the construction began and included the re development of the original Wentwood Hills course together with the construction of 9 new holes under the design and supervision of Ross McMurray from EGD. Ian Martin was the construction manager for the project; all works including construction, drainage, irrigation, cultivation and seeding were included in the contract.
Works continued into 2006 and were completed in the autumn of that year. During 2006 the resort decided to re develop the original Coldra Woods course and utilise the remaining 9 holes of the original Wentwwod Hills course. Colin Montgomerie was announced as the lead designer and the course developed that included his name.
The contract to carry out the entire works to the Montgomerie course was negotiated and completed during 2006, this included the earthworks, shaping, bunker renovations, installation of new drainage and irrigation systems, cultivation and seeding.
